The moment

You know the one

He's closing the distance. Bigger than you. Twenty years younger, maybe. Maybe high. Your wife is behind you, or your daughter, or nobody, and nobody is coming.

Your heart is already slamming. Your hands go cold. Your vision narrows to a tunnel. Everything you ever learned in a class (the six-step wrist release, the spinning back fist, the stuff you practiced on a mat with a partner who was trying to let you win) is gone.

Adam Seegmiller has been there. Here's how he puts it:

"Your knees are shaking, your heart's racing, you're not thinking about everything that we taught you."Adam, HAVOC lesson 16

That's not a weakness. That's biology. It happens to rookies and it happens to operators. And it is exactly why almost everything you've been sold for self-defense fails the one time it matters.

The fight is decided in the first 15 to 30 seconds. Adam's rule:

"I can't express to you the importance enough of finishing the fight in 15 to 30 seconds. Beyond 30 seconds, you're going to be super gassed, you're going to start running out of energy. And then it becomes who's fitter, who's stronger, maybe who's on drugs."Adam, HAVOC lesson 8

Who's fitter. Who's stronger. If you're over 40, you don't want the fight to turn into that contest.

What can you do in the first 15 seconds that still works with your heart at 145 and your hands shaking?

That's what HAVOC teaches. Nothing else.

What you've been sold

Why it won't save you

Traditional martial arts

Adam started young. Taekwondo, competing at a fairly high level in high school. Then he found out what it was worth:

"The only time I ever tried that in a bar, in a real fight, I got put on my ass. And then I tried that later on, goofing around in the army with some tough guys, and I got put on my ass again."Adam, HAVOC lesson 30

He noticed something else. In class, his instructors taught "these seven, 10, 12 movement techniques." When they actually sparred, they threw two or three hard moves and got out. So why teach the rest?

"Because they need content for a class."Adam, HAVOC lesson 3

Jiu-jitsu and the ground

HAVOC's co-instructor, Andrew MacDonald, is a third-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu who took first place at the AGP Rome Grand Slam. Adam asked him straight out whether the ground is where he wants to be in a fight. His answer: "Absolutely not."

The street has no mats. In Adam's words: "Glass, rocks, curbs, cars, people have friends that come out of nowhere and kick you."

Boxing and MMA

"He throws punches, whoever the better boxer is, is going to win. I'm not going to do that."Adam, HAVOC lesson 23

If your plan is to out-punch a younger, heavier man, you need a better plan.

The gun

Adam has used a firearm to defend himself in a real situation. That's exactly why he doesn't think it's a plan by itself. Even where you can carry, you often can't take it into many buildings, government offices, planes or trains. And a weekend course doesn't make you ready. From his own book:

"Yes, they can put holes in paper but take it from me, this is a far cry from knowing what to do with a firearm in an emergency situation."Adam, Be Your Own Bodyguard

In a lot of the places he worked overseas, carrying one wasn't allowed: "a lot of those locations didn't allow me by virtue of my role to carry a weapon." When the gun isn't there, the plan is your hands.

Hoping it never happens

There were 1.21 million violent crimes in the United States in a single year. Every one of those victims assumed it wouldn't be them. Adam doesn't let anyone off the hook:

"Yeah, you can blame the guy for throwing a sucker punch, but blame yourself for lacking the tactical acumen to put yourself in a position to not get punched."Adam, HAVOC lesson 10
The system

What actually works under adrenaline

When a real threat hits, your heart rate spikes past 145 beats a minute. At that point, in Adam's words, "your fine motor skills and peripheral vision start to diminish." Complex technique is gone. What's left is your gross motor movement and your instincts.

So HAVOC doesn't fight your body's reaction. It's built on it. When you're startled, you square up to the threat and your hands come up. Every person does it. Adam: "So we're using our body's natural reaction to stress, an autonomous reaction to build their platform for all of our striking and all of our self-defense."

Then you do three things, fast:

  1. Position

You set your distance and your angle before he knows a fight has started. To him, and to every witness, you look like a man pleading for calm. You're actually in a guard.

  2. Strike first, hard, and keep going

"It's speed and aggression." You don't trade punches. You overwhelm him so his brain can't catch up: "We want to overwhelm his brain, overwhelm his body and have him shut down."

  3. Hit what size and drugs can't protect

A man on drugs can fight through pain, and a bigger man can absorb a punch. There are a few places on the human body where none of that matters. HAVOC goes there, and only there.

Then you put him down and you leave. That's the whole system. Adam calls it "a bare bones, down and dirty, gross motor skill, street fighting, self-defense program." His rule for every technique in it:

"The genius is in the simplicity, if it's complex, it's not going to work."Adam, HAVOC lesson 1

Lesson 19: pinned against a bench, "that one hand is still enough."

SGT MAJOR (RET.)

Adam Seegmiller

"I retired after 24 years in the military as a Sergeant Major."Adam, HAVOC lesson 1
  • 24 years in uniform. Close Protection and Police SWAT qualified, then seven years in Special Operations.
  • About five years deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan (more than two years in Afghanistan alone), plus Eastern Europe, Africa and other parts of the Middle East.
  • Kandahar, 2006. His combat experience there is featured in the book Operation Medusa.
  • Commendation from Canada's Chief of Defence for his leadership while heading the small team that protected the Ambassador and the Canadian Embassy in Kabul.
  • Over a decade in high-risk close protection, often in places where he wasn't allowed to carry a weapon. His hands were the plan.
  • A member of the Special Operations fight team, which traveled to train with private and government organizations to find the most effective techniques "to give to the guys when they have to go hands free."
  • Trained alongside U.S. Navy SEALs, Delta Force, British SAS and Australian SASR.
  • Knocked out for real, "from falling out of helicopters to being in the cage with MMA fighters." He has taken shots from high-level pro MMA fighters.
  • Chief instructor to federal and local police tactical teams and counter-terrorism units. He has taught hundreds of military and law enforcement personnel hand-to-hand combat.

HAVOC started as a program for a military unit, built "for guys that don't have a high level of self-defense skills, but find themselves in situations that they need it." Adam was in the working group that built it more than ten years ago. He's been refining it ever since.

The night he learned what fear does

Before any of that, Adam took a job working the door at the roughest bar in town, on purpose. His first night, a man was beating his girlfriend with a closed fist. Adam stepped in. She smashed a beer bottle on his face and broke his tooth, and the boyfriend beat him badly.

His own girlfriend asked how long he was going to keep doing this. He said:

"Until my knees stop shaking."

HAVOC is everything he learned after that night.

Andrew MacDonald with his arm raised after a jiu-jitsu competition win

Andrew MacDonald

  • Third-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, 20+ years across Sanda, Sambo, boxing, Muay Thai and BJJ
  • Gold at the AGP Rome Grand Slam; silver at AGP Tokyo and the IBJJF Asia Open
  • Head coach of Arete Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Bangkok

Andrew pressure-tests every technique in HAVOC against real resistance. When a world-class grappler tells you to stay off the ground, believe him.

Built for you

"I'm not 25 anymore. Can this work for me?"

Yes. It was built for you.

HAVOC isn't for the guy who wants a UFC contract. Adam says so in lesson 3: "You're not going to take this program, practice it a few times and jump in the cage and have a contract with UFC."

It's for the man with a family to protect, a body that isn't what it was, and no time to "go to a class five nights a week for three years in order to develop a basic level of competency."

"It is simple and effective, and someone my age can easily perform these techniques. I love it."

Inside HAVOC

What you'll discover in 30 lessons

Under three hours of video, in five phases. Here's a small part of what's inside.

Before the first punch

  • L10

The "harmless" hands position that makes every witness see a frightened man begging for calm, while it's actually a loaded guard.

  • L10

Why you should never look a threat in the eyes, and where Special Operations operators look instead.

  • L04

The one-inch step that puts you exactly where his best punch is at its weakest, before he ever throws it.

  • L10

The safe-distance rule that's measured with his leg, not yours. Get it wrong and you're already in range.

  • L29

The village tell Adam learned in Afghanistan that warns you something's wrong before anyone makes a move.

  • L07

How most knockouts really happen (it's not the big punch), and the simple head position that protects you from the one you don't see.

  • L10

Why you must never back straight up when a man rushes you, and the move that sends him stumbling past you instead.

Hit first, hit hard

  • L12

Why punching a man in the face is one of the worst things you can do in a street fight, and what to hit him with instead.

  • L25

The open-hand strike that wrecks his balance and leaves him disoriented.

  • L30

The only kick in HAVOC, and why every other kick gets you "put on your ass" (Adam's words).

  • L30

What Adam learned hammering a pro boxer's thigh for five rounds, and why you'll never see that kick in this course.

  • L17

How to overwhelm a man's brain so he's making bad decisions before he realizes the fight has started.

  • L08

The 15-to-30-second rule, and why you're in serious trouble the moment a fight runs past it.

When he swings first

  • L13

The one cover that works against every punch he throws. No blocks to memorize, and none of the six months of drilling that blocking takes.

  • L16

The punch you're most likely to face in a street fight (it's not a jab), and the counter that can drop him with a single strike.

  • L28

The operator's grip that pins him in place and protects your chin at the same time.

  • L26

Why a shot to the groin often just makes him angrier, and what HAVOC goes for instead.

A training partner swings as Adam drives in, in a padded mat room From the course
Strike first, hard, and keep going.

Close, ugly and over fast

  • L18

The technique Special Forces operators called bullshit, until Adam put it on them. It works on men who can take a punch.

  • L19

How to control a bigger man with one free hand when you're pinned against a wall, in a car seat or in a bathroom stall.

  • L20

The move Adam almost cut from the course, and the undercover officer who said "the best training they ever got was some of this stuff."

  • L18

Why pain alone won't stop a man who's high, and the one target he can't fight through.

  • L21

"Where the head goes, the body follows": two hand positions that steer a man wherever you want him.

Put him down and end it

  • L14

How to put a bigger man on the ground without going down with him, the reason a BJJ black belt says "absolutely not" to the ground.

  • L22

How to stop a man who's beating someone else, from behind or the side.

  • L13

The two-word finish, "nose to toes", that puts him down and gets you out.

  • L16

The level-of-force rule that helps you end the fight and stay on the right side of it.

And that's not all of it. Every technique is shown slow, then at live speed, by Adam and Andrew.

What the men who've trained it say

"Hello, I am currently going through your HAVOC program. I am 62 with 45 years of martial arts, 24 years of military, and over 40 years of LE and security. It is simple and effective, and someone my age can easily perform these techniques. I love it."

Derek S., 6245 years martial arts, 24 years military

"I'm learning so much, I wish I had this a few months back, I got into a street fight with a guy and if I new how to take him out quickly I wouldn't have been jumped by the 4 others…. We were boxing and that gave his friends time to get to my six and do damage from the back.."

"Really good stuff. I'm sure your critics think it starts too slow - you know, "show me the ninja shit." But this program is very solid and very in line with the realities that face most people in a confrontation."

"I have studied TKD and Aikido. I know what they are talking about when they talk about typical martial arts training vs what works in the street. So, far, this is very down-to-earth stuff."

"I am a BJJ student and love it. But it takes a good while ( and it should) to become proficient at BJJ. … The simple, gross motor methods it teaches were easily learned and upped my confidence for real-life violence greatly in a short period of time. So I highly recommend this program."

Joel L.BJJ and combatives, 25+ years

"You guys have a great balance of soft skills, hard skills, and also very transparent on the legal consequences, and what you feel after a violent encounter. You guys are the real deal."

Questions

Before you decide

I'm over 50 and not in great shape. Will this work?

That's who it was built for. Gross-motor moves, a fight that's over in seconds, and targets that don't care about size or strength.

Can I really learn this from video?

Yes. Every technique is shown slow, then at live speed, with Adam and Andrew. Most take a handful of reps at home to get right.

Do I need a training partner?

Not to start. A partner helps you sharpen it later.

I already train jiu-jitsu, boxing or Krav. Is this a waste?

No. It fills the gap your training leaves on the street: no mat, no gloves, no ref, and maybe his friends. Andrew, a third-degree BJJ black belt, teaches half of it.

Will I get in legal trouble?

HAVOC teaches you to match your level of force to his, end it and get to safety. Adam: "The level of force I'm using is directly dependent on the level of force he's exhibiting towards me." Know your local laws. HAVOC is not legal advice.

Does it work for women or smaller men?

Yes. The targets HAVOC teaches don't care how big the man attached to them is.

Is this a subscription?

No. It's $97 once, with lifetime access. After checkout we'll offer optional add-ons. Take them or don't.

The next 15 seconds won't be fair

It won't be on a mat. Nobody will stop it. Adam:

"This isn't sport. This isn't in a ring. So there's no ref. You say time out, there's nobody there that's going to stop it."Adam, HAVOC lesson 2

You can keep hoping. Or you can spend a weekend learning what a Special Operations Sergeant Major teaches the men who go hands-free into hostile places, and own it for life for $97.

"During an assault there are only two sides, it starts with a Predator and Prey, but ends with a Victor and a Victim. Decide right now, you will not be a victim."Adam, Be Your Own Bodyguard
